A MUM has appealed for witnesses after her son was struck by a hit-and-run driver and “left on the side of the road” while on his way to school.
Stuart Ward was crossing B4639 Berkeley Way on his way to Bishop Perowne College when a car hit him head on, before driving away.
The 16-year-old’s mum, Sarah Ward, said her son was unable to get the car’s licence plate but believes the impact probably cracked the windscreen.
“It’s a long straight, the guy must have seen him,” said Ms Ward. “He went up the windscreen. I wouldn’t be able to just keep driving after that.”
Stuart had cycled from his Warndon Villages home when he dismounted to cross the road just before the roundabout near Tesco and the Barn Owl pub at about 7.30am on June 3.
He sustained minor injuries to his arm and shoulder, while an old ankle injury has also “flared up” according to Ms Ward.
“He is quite big, quite robust, he is built more like a man,” she continued. “If it had been one of his friends, they would’ve been snapped like a twig.”
Stuart carried on to school, with his bike undamaged, and reported the incident before staff then contacted his mum.
“I got a phone call saying: ‘Before I speak, he is fine’ and I was like, ‘Oh, God!’” said Ms Ward.
“They reported it to the police and we went round to the police station.
“The school said he was hit off his bike and went into the windscreen, which smashed.
“But he said he was walking with his bike and went up the windscreen and that it must’ve cracked it.”
“Trouble is, he’s got no number plate. His main concern was his bike. He was crossing the road by the island and had already got off his bike.”
The mum went on to say, Stuart had stopped crossing while two other cars drove passed but the car in question, which he believes was a dark-coloured BMW, seemed to come out of nowhere.
The teenager was shaken up by the incident but has not had any time off school as he is in the middle of doing exams.
West Mercia Police are keen to speak to any witnesses, particularly anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident.
Call 101 and quote incident number 0136S of June 3 if you can help with the investigation.
