A DERELICT former nightclub could be transformed into student accommodation.

The old Images club in The Butts, Worcester would be demolished and replaced by a seven-storey student housing block.

The building, opposite The Hive, has been derelict since Funk nightclub closed down in February 2012.

In 2014, the city council's licensing sub-committee gave the green light to the site becoming a club named Mamma Jammas, aimed at over 30s, despite fierce opposition from West Mercia Police who believed the venue would increase crime in the area.

But the plans never came to fruition and the eyesore building remained derelict.

Now plans have been released by Rengen Developments, Iesis and Plan It, the team behind the project, on a website showing how the 96-bed student block could look.

The designs, shown in artist's impressions, include a mixture of red and buff bricks and multi-coloured panels, while there would be a bicycle parking store and no car park.

In Boy Rees architect's artist impressions of the proposed building, there are signs calling the building 'Images Student Accommodation', although it is not clear if this is the official name.

The plans are available to view on the planit-planningdevelopment.co.uk, and appear to have been used for public consultation.

In the material, there is a joint statement from the developers saying: "We will prepare and submit a planning application to Worcester City Council.

"The city council's planning department will consult local residents and you will be able to formerly comment on the proposals before they are determined by the local planning authority."

The Worcester News approached the owner of the site, Ian Perks – who also owns units in Broad Street – who said he could not comment on the proposal at this point.

An approach was also made to the developers for further details on the scheme and asking when the application would be submitted, but nobody was available to comment.

Lynn Denham, who represents Cathedral ward on Worcester City Council, said she was pleased to see plans to remove the "eyesore" building.

She said: "I think people will be pleased to see the redevelopment of the old nightclub. It is an eyesore and it has been vacant for some time now.

"It has great potential to be accommodation as the previous application for a different kind of nightclub led to some concerns from residents about crime and anti-social behaviour but that came to nothing.

"One of the things I am concerned about though is that area of the city centre particularly. The Butts is a hotspot for poor air quality – particularly with all the cars and heavy congestion along there – and we need to make sure it doesn't become a sort of street canyon development."
