SCHOOLCHILDREN dressed as their favourite characters from their best-loved novels to celebrate the wonderful world of books.

The youngsters donned their best outfits for World Book Day, an annual event to give youngsters the chance to bring their favourite literary characters to life.

Jane Howard, assistant head at Cranham Primary School, said: “We have been doing lots of work around vocabulary at the moment so we asked our children to come dressed as a word, slightly different from book characters because it ties in with what we are doing in school.”

“One person came wrapped in bubble wrap because they were the word ‘fragile.’

"Someone dressed in spots because they were the word ‘contagious.’

"The staff have been videoed reading and enjoying books in lots of places around the school. The children have recorded a song about reading to the tune of Giant by Rag n Bone Man.”

Cranham Primary School also held a book fair after school.

Rachel Cummings, English lead at Pitmaston Primary School said: “We started the day with a whole school assembly, which was a bit of a mission to get all the pupils into the hall but it was lovely to have them all together and we had a procession of all the outfits.

"The staff dressed up as phonic sounds to support teaching of reading and writing down in the early years.

"The children have done some creative writing activities, they have written stories to include some of the characters they have come as and explored some of the vocabulary relating to their characters.

"We had a bell which meant drop everything and read, so a bell went off and the children dropped everything and read for 15 minutes. It was a really nice atmosphere where the children became engrossed in the books they had brought in.”
