THE sad death of Terry Birt will be upsetting news for many thousands of people he helped during his long career.

Tributes have flooded in for the cricketing stalwart, who died at the age of 72.

And the warm tributes, which talk about his impact and how he inspired generations of county cricketers, speak volumes about the man.

Former Worcestershire cricketer Stuart Lampitt summed it best with his tribute calling him “a forefather, a sage, an inspiration to all.”

But although like any death the first feeling is sadness when the news is announced, now is a time to reflect on a fantastic career, and the amazing impact Mr Birt had. His legacy is one to be treasured, and will be continued by volunteers. There are coaches in sports across the county giving up their valuable time to support the next generation, like Mr Birt did for decades.

Mr Birt’s life will be remembered at his funeral later this month, where no doubt many people will pay their respects.

Rest in peace Terry.
