A DISUSED club premises in Malvern town centre could be brought back to life if a licensing application is approved.

Malvern Radio Ltd has applied to Worcestershire Regulatory Services for a premises licence for 4 Church Street, part of the building housing the town’s post office and Royal Mail sorting office.

The basement premises was formerly the Malvern Conservative Club. However, that closed its doors in 2005.

The current licensing application seeks to permit the “performance of plays, showing of films, indoor sporting events, playing of live music, playing of recorded music, performances of dance, late night refreshment and supply of alcohol.”

The opening hours being applied for are from 11am to 11pm on Sundays through to Thursdays, and 11am to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The venue was closed down by the then chairman of the Malvern Hills Conservative Club, Mal Downey, in 2005 after the building’s owner, the Post Office, would not offer a five-year lease, which was needed so the club could borrow £15,000 for vital refurbishment work.

At the time, Dr Downey said an agreed two-year deal was not long enough.

The venue, which had become known as the Re-Con, was the subject of another attempt to re-open it in 2012, which followed a petition signed by more than 350 people calling for it to be revived.

At that time, it was described as “the only designated venue for live performance and the arts in the town”.

The 2102 application described it as having “a lounge bar with a small performance area, the function room with its own bar and larger performance space, games room, storage/changing area, male and female toilets, lobby and a small external smoking area.”
