POLICE have warned Worcestershire residents to be wary of callers pretending to be deaf and dumb'.

The man and woman, of Eastern European origin, have been knocking on doors and begging for cash or trying to sell pictures.

The alert comes after incidents at four addresses in the Tenbury Wells area.

A police spokesman said: "We have spoken to the individuals concerned and ascertained that they are not deaf and dumb' as they claim.

"They have been given suitable advice about what they were doing, but could choose to ignore it and return, or do the same thing elsewhere. We strongly urge residents not to be taken in by their disability claims."

Two involved a fair-haired woman - the first at Rochford at about 1pm on Sunday, September 9 and the second in Stockton-on-Teme at 7.24pm yesterday.

The others, which both happened in Mamble, involved a man. One occurred at 9.44pm on yesterday and the other at about noon today. Anyone with information can call police on 08457 444 888, quoting 523-s-090907 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
