A CAMPAIGNING group of residents in Worcester has written to the Environment Agency calling for answers over the potential risk of flooding if more homes are built in and around the city.

Claines Action Group is concerned that thousands of new properties could exacerbate an already worsening situation.

Spokesman Terry Sims said: "In light of this summer's severe flooding we want to know what impact the thousands of extra homes being allocated in the area are going to have."

The Government wants to build up to 32,200 new homes in south Worcestershire by 2026 as part of its Regional Spatial Strategy - a blueprint for how the county should look in 20 years time.

A six-week consultation will begin on Monday, November 5 for people to have their say on how many new homes should be built.

Mr Sims said: "In the consultation period people should be asking: Will thousands of extra homes and additional road infrastructure lessen the flooding risk? and will there be less traffic in the city and can the A38 and Junction 6 of the M5 cope with additional traffic being generated by additional housing?"

Mr Sims said he had sent those questions to the Environment Agency and was now awaiting a response. He added he was concerned that the scheme could be approved without the full impact of the flood situation being assessed.
