DISGRUNTLED Droitwich people went head to head with developers and council officers at a public meeting to discuss the future of the Spa's town centre.

The 60 residents who came to hear about an ambitious expansion of the western side of Salters shopping centre were told 81p in every £1 spent by Droitwich people on non-food goods was going elsewhere.

The town's regeneration manager Chris Brooks said: "We run the risk of losing jobs and significant employers."

Wychavon District Council policy manager Fred Davies added: "If you don't invest in your town centre the situation will get worse."

However, residents told developer Kandahar Real Estate's director Mike Tyler they did not want a nightclub or multi-storey car park. Rumours of both have been rife in the town.

Mr Tyler was also repeatedly accused of concealing plans from residents.

People clapped when one man said: "I'm still non the wiser as to what is proposed and what isn't.

"You people know exactly what you've got in mind but trying to get information from you is virtually impossible.

"Why don't you come clean with us now?"

Mike Tyler denied having firm plans but said a nightclub was not planned.

Instead he talked about a cinema, bowling alley and restaurants and said popular retailers such as Woolworths, Dorothy Perkins and Next would come to Droitwich if bigger units were built.

He also promised to listen to comments from a public consultation which ends at 5pm on Friday, November 2.

Concerns about building on the town's historic brine pits and the discovery of roman remains were also raised.
