A MAN has died after the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle on a Worcestershire road.

Three passengers in the red Vauxhall Corsa heading towards Evesham and the driver of the other vehicle travelling in the opposite direction also suffered injuries in the incident which happened last night.

The fire brigade believe the young man who died was a local traveller. The coroner for the county, Geraint Williams, has been informed and a post mortem examination is expected to take place tomorrow.

Paramedics, police, and fire crews were all called to the scene on the A44 Evesham Road at Fladbury Cross, near Fladbury, at about 7.30pm.

The driver of a blue Renault Modus travelling towards Pershore, a lady believed to be in her 40s, was trapped in her car.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Alec Mackie said: "She was cut free by crews from Evesham and Pebworth with neck and back injuries. She was taken to hospital as were the three casualties from the car driven by the guy who died."

Two male youths were transported on spinal boards to Worcestershire Royal Hospital with possible neck, back, arm and abdominal injuries, while a teenage girl suffered severe facial injuries.

West Midlands Ambulance Service group station manager from Worcester, Dug Holloway, was called to the scene of the incident.

He said: "This was a large road traffic incident, with multiple casualties. We had sixteen medical staff on scene dealing with the injured. There was excellent co-operation between the emergency services working together to help these people. We are grateful to the police in particular who continued to assist us with the safe transport and admission of the patients to Worcester Royal Hospital".

Police closed the road for about five hours and diversions were put in place while the scene was investigated.
