WORCESTER News reporter Grace Walton is taking part in Strictly Worcestershire, a ballroom dancing competition inspired by the hit BBC show, which will raise money for local good causes.
She spoke to instructor Sharon Tilki who is teaching all of the contestants.
Although she won’t be dancing herself on May 23 next year, Sharon has one of the key roles in Strictly Worcestershire and does far more than just teaching.
Personally, Sharon is my go-to for everything. She has supported me during my stress-fuelled outbursts and been a constant supportive presence to remind me why I signed up for this challenge in the first place.
As you’d expect, the training is intense – but we have fun with it. I have hit the deck several times during training and Sharon, being her delightful self, finds it hilarious and often takes a photo of me on the floor, which does actually lift my spirits.
So it’s no surprise that the popular instructor has been chosen to teach all of the contestants for Strictly 6 in the county.
Sharon said: “I wasn’t expecting to be chosen by everyone – it is so special and a fantastic opportunity.
“My job is to hold people’s hand along the way. All they should be thinking about is learning their routines.”
Sharon has been involved with the Strictly Worcestershire experience since it started six years ago. She trained the winners from Strictly 2, 3, 4 and 5.
“I have a passion for dancing and I love sharing this experience with people and watching the contestants develop their own love for dancing,” she said.
“It is such a positive journey and each year we raise vital funds for local charities.”
Sharon began performing at the age of six at local dance school, Fletcher Dance Studios.
She was approached by her dance teacher at 17 and asked to take over the classes as he was retiring.
She has gone on to build up a reputation and recently celebrated her 30th anniversary as principal of Worcester Dance Centre.
Sharon is also heavily involved in the community, keeping busy as a governor at Dines Green Primary School and Nursery and also a director at the Mercian Educational Trust.
“I am passionate about the future of our children and being involved with the community,” Sharon said.
Her wit and positive energy have made a huge impression on all of Strictly 6’s contestants.
