A RUN-DOWN playground in Worcester is set for a revamp.

Worcester City Council is considering plans from different companies for the redevelopment of the park, between Batsford Road and Norton Road Pedway in St Peter's.

St Peter's Parish Council viewed artist impressions of the three options on the table at its latest meeting.

City councillor Roger Knight, who is also a parish councillor, said: "The refurbishment will be very welcome and timely as these play areas are becoming a little tired and boring for the children.

"The plans for the new look are very exciting, completely new ideas in play equipment, very colourful and look great fun.

"I wish I was a bit younger myself - I think I could have a whale of a time."

The project is part of an ongoing programme by the city council to ensure children's play facilities are updated and renewed on a regular basis.

As part of the work, the hedge and fences at the site will be reduced in height to allow natural surveillance.

Coun Knight added: "Not only will it provide a great facility and lots of fun for our children, the new open look will make it less attractive for those who have, in the past, tucked themselves away behind the hedges for late night drinking sessions. So, good news all round.

"The refurbishment of the play areas near Abbotsbury Court and the new Baptist Church along with Springfield Road, by Duck Brook, are very good examples of this and have proven to be the most popular play areas in St Peter's."

The site, which contains a section for older children and one for toddlers, will keep this format. The work is expected to be started at the beginning of next year.

The council is unable to say how much the redevelopment - to be paid for through its capital funding programme - will cost until an option is chosen.
