THOUSANDS of people made their morning cup of coffee count by taking part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

Today a record number of people - more than 500 - held coffee mornings across the county and it's hoped that all the coffee slurping, tea glugging and biscuit munching will have raised more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

At Lyppard Grange Community Centre, in Warndon Villages, Worcester, about 100 people raised £365.

Centre manager Mo Walker said the day went fantastically.

"We had lots of people from the community, lots of our user groups, staff and volunteers, come along," she said.

"We really want to thank Tesco, who donated all the cakes and biscuits, a gesture I was absolutely over the moon with."

Thursfields solicitors, in Foregate Street, Worcester, managed to amass an impressive £1,000, while O'Neills in Nicholas Street, Worcester, held an extended coffee morning which ran until 5pm.

The pub's manager James Anderson said: "We wanted people to bring along their favourite mug and, in return for a voluntary donation to Macmillan, we filled it with a hot drink of their choice from our menu."

Staff are still counting how much they've raised.

Employees at npower's Worcester office were joined by Worcester Warriors scrum half, Jonny Arr, for their green themed coffee morning.

Mr Arr put npower staff through their paces on the Batak board, testing reflexes and burning off calories following an over-indulgence of rock buns and cup cakes.

Everyone was encouraged to wear green clothes for the day and a fancy dress competition with a green heroes theme, saw staff turning up as Peter Pan, the Green Goddess, the Jolly Green Giant, Shrek, the Incredible Hulk, Grotbags and Green Claw.

Early indications show they've raised well over £3,000.

Worcestershire's Macmillan coffee morning organiser Jon Rayner said he was delighted with the record breaking number of residents, businesses and organisations who took part in this year's event.

"People have really been getting into the spirit of things and, who knows, we might break the £100,000 mark."

Macmillan Cancer Support improves the lives of people affected by cancer by providing practical, medical, emotional and financial support.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning helps the charity run essential services such as information centres, health and social-care professionals and financial grants.
