A BRIGHT future is predicted for a troubled Worcester school following the appointment of a new headteacher.

Andrew Grace will take over Elgar Technology College, which is currently in special measures, at the beginning of next year.

Mr Grace, who is currently acting head at the Pedmore Technology College in Stourbridge, was appointed on Tuesday evening and has 25 years of teaching experience.

The 48-year-old said he was excited about the prospect of his new role.

"The feeling that I got from the school is that there is a great momentum there," he said. "I am looking forward to putting all my skills into practice and getting the youngsters all the education they need.

"There are some very dedicated and caring staff there who want the children to do well. We also have the support of a very strong governing body. I want to bring my years of experience into play with them. I know and believe that they school has got a very good future."

In June a federation was formed between Elgar and the troubled Baxter College in Kidderminster, with Baxter's head David Seddon becoming executive headteacher of both schools.

Mr Seddon has been credited with transforming Baxter from a failing school into a highly successful one.

He said he was "delighted" to appoint Mr Grace, who he had known for a long time', as the new headteacher and would support him as long as was needed.

Mr Seddon said Mr Grace was put through a rigorous interview process, which included being placed in front of a panel of eight students.

"The governors wanted to see the interaction he had with the children," he said. "He has got great presence, which is really important when you are dealing with children.

"He was just the right person for the right job. He has got the skills and the enthusiasm and I have the experience. I think this is just what the school needs.

"It has had four heads in eight months. That's not good. The stability will come from him and the continuity from myself, linking with him."

Chairman of Governors Gill Hellings said it was excellent news for the school.

"The panel's decision was unanimous," she revealed. "Andrew has a challenging but exciting task ahead of him but he has the backing of a united governing body and some very talented staff."

Originally from Wakefield, Mr Grace is married and has one son. He has taught at the Stourbridge school for the past four years.
