A FORMER England World Cup footballer was the star attraction at a fundraising evening held at Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

Wolves and England legend Steve Bull took to the floor and gave tales of his playing days and career, before a question and answer session, at the fundraiser for Help for Heroes.

Neil Roberts, a volunteer for the Help for Heroes charity, organised the evening, which was originally planned to be held in a marquee but was changed to the Tom Graveney Lounge in the Main Stand at the New Road venue due to high winds.

The evening began with Mr Roberts telling the audience about the charity. Comedian Bob Webb also provided entertainment on the night before Steve Saul, the owner of Route 39 sporting memorabilia, held a silent auction for the charity.

Overall, through ticket sales, a raffle, games and donations, the evening managed to raise £2,920 for the charity that supports members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded while serving their country.

Mr Roberts said: “The support of friends, family, and new acquaintances was absolutely overwhelming, and of course having Steve Bull only added to the delight of the evening. There is a more serious note to the event, where the hard earned cash donations will be gratefully received.

"Although our service personnel may not visibly be involved in conflicts such as Afghanistan anymore, it does not absolve the charity from current and future obligations, and it is crucial that the charity remains at the forefront of the public eye.

"Watch this space for future fundraisers, as the unique point of the schemes that are put together are that they should be fun, as well as having a serious side.”
