TWO injured rugby players were airlifted to hospital within an hour of each other.

The County Air Ambulance was called to two separate incidents in Malvern.

The helicopter's pilot, Mike Kent, said: "These are really good jobs for the helicopter. We can land right next to the patient in the rugby field. The transfer to hospital is also much more comfortable for a back injury and obviously faster."

The first incident happened in the playing fields in Barnards Green Road at about 3.35pm on Wednesday.

A rapid response vehicle and the air ambulance from Strensham were sent to the scene.

A 16-year-old boy from Tewkesbury was airlifted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital complaining of neck and back pain. He was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board.

The second incident came into the Emergency Operations Centre at 4.25pm and a response car was sent to The Chase Technology College in Geraldine Road.

The paramedic realised that the air ambulance would be ideal for taking the 14-year-old Malvern boy to hospital and requested the helicopter, which took the boy to the same hospital.
