YOUNG performers are set to step back into Worcestershire's musical past.

Pupils from Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, in Timberdine Avenue, Worcester, donned mediaeval costumes and tried out period instruments in preparation for a new musical initiative which starts in Worcester this October.

Worcestershire Waits is a unique music group for youngsters who are interested in playing and singing music from the past. The project is being funded by the National Foundation for Youth Music and Worcestershire Arts Education, and run in association with Singworks.

It celebrates the fact that, during the Middle Ages, many European towns had official bands that played music for important occasions. In England, these bands were called Waits. This new group, for children aged between 10 and 18, revives that ancient tradition.

All youngsters, whether they are interested in singing or playing a musical instrument or both, are invited to join the group.

As well as playing music from the past on their own instruments, some members will have the chance to have a go at playing copies of historical instruments.

The ensemble will perform a concert of historical Christmas music at St John's Church, Worcester, in early December.

Cathy Dew, Singworks project manager and one of the leaders of the new group, said, "Early music is lively, engaging and entertaining.

"Historical Christmas music is particularly exciting. We will be performing everything from wild mediaeval wassail songs to beautiful lullabies from 16-century Latin America.

"This group will help young people develop their musical skills and is really enjoyable as well!"

Worcestershire Waits meet for the first time on Thursday, October 4, with a free taster session.
