A CAFE owner in Worcester has stirred up a storm by selling 'Ronaldo biscuits' in the shape of a couple having sex.
The biscuits were on sale at Our Taste of Portugal in the Hopmarket, and refer to the Portuguese international football player Cristiano Ronaldo, who is at the centre of a row involving rape allegations.
Cafe owner Jose Goncalves, referred to the biscuits as a “joke” but he has been widely criticised on social media and by two county-based sexual abuse charities.
He said: “I’m sorry if I made people feel bad. I just want to say sorry to everyone. We only made 30 of them and our clients and friends found the joke.
“We did not use the word rape. I am homosexual and abused as a child. If there are people who do not like to hear that word, then I am one of them.”
Subsequently, the cafe’s Facebook post mentioning the biscuits has been taken down.
Lydia Johnson, coordinator at the Glade Sexual Assault Referral Centre, based at Bransford, said: “Rape and sexual assault is never something that should be joked about or made light of – it’s really disappointing to see this happening.
“It’s not surprising that people struggle to disclose abuse and report to the police when people are turning rape allegations into a joke.
“However, we know that victims who choose to speak out about abuse and get support should be enormously applauded for their bravery, because it takes a huge amount of courage to do that.
“We will support people whether they have reported to the police or not - our freephone line is open 24/7 and can be called on 0808 178 2058.”
A spokesman for West Mercia Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre said: “We would like to express sadness and concern that any business would feel that it is appropriate or acceptable to not only make a joke out of a rape allegation, but to also attempt to capitalise on it.
“We are heartened to see that the majority of the local community share our values and opinions in their condemnation of this unacceptable behaviour.”
