DETECTIVES investigating the stabbing of an off-duty West Mercia policeman have released CCTV footage of the attack, with the police and crime commissioner describing the incident as "horrific".

The 25-year-old officer was approached by a hooded man who demanded his car keys before lashing out with a knife, leaving him with stab wounds to his chest.

The attack took place around 3.40pm on Wednesday (September 5) in Moreton Avenue, Great Barr, Walsall, with the offender making off in a dark blue Ford Fiesta.

The officer, who has not been named but believed to be from Worcestershire, was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries which were not serious. He was discharged later that day and is recovering at home.

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “My thoughts are with the officer and his family.

“This horrific incident happened when one of West Mercia Police's hard working and professional officers was off duty and going about his daily business.

“Along with the police force, and on behalf of our communities, I'd like to wish him well in his recovery.”

The CCTV footage shows the officer, dressed in jeans, a blue t-shirt and white shoes, approaching a cream VW Mini before being chased down by the offender.

The attacker is wearing a black hooded jacket, with the hood up, and dark trousers.

Detective Inspector Chris Fox, from force CID, said: “I am appealing for anyone with information on what happened to come forward and speak to us.

“The offender made off from the scene in a dark blue Ford Fiesta.

"He was wearing dark clothing but, as can be seen in the video, the hood appears to be of a shiny material. Do you recognise it?

“If you know anything, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please get in touch as it could be vital to our investigation."
