WORCESTER Cathedral was packed for the popular Worcester News' annual carol service.

There was an impressive turn out for the event which marks the start of the Christmas countdown for many.

The service, which raises money for Worcester Cathedral Music Fund, has grown in popularity in recent years with this year's event taking place on Thursday evening.

The event began with the choir entering the cathedral singing Once In Royal David's City, with the whole congregation then joining in.

Dean of Worcester, the Reverend Peter Atkinson, welcomed the congregation and introduced the service.

There were readings from Julia Lancett, managing director of Newsquest Midlands South who read Luke 1.26-38, and Worcester News' deputy editor, Michael Purton, who read Luke 1.1-7.

Dignitaries who attended included the High Sheriff of Worcestershire High Sheriff Stephen Betts, Andrew Grant, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, chairman of Worcestershire County Council Anne Hingley and MPs Robin Walker and Harriett Baldwin.

Mayor of Worcester Councillor Steve Mackay also attended and gave a reading of Luke 2.8-18.

Favourites sung during the evening included Away in a Manger, O Come All Ye Faithful and God Rest You Merry Gentleman.

Promotions manager Sarah Bevan, who helps organise the service annually, said: "Thank you to all the readers and invited guests who attended - there were more than 1,000.

"It was an amazing service, and the choir were outstanding as always.

"We wish all our readers a merry Christmas and a happy new year."
