Private 1556 William Hubert George Howse
1/1st Battalion, Herefordshire Regiment
Dies 22/08/1915 at Gallipoli
Private Howse was born at St Nicholas, Worcester in 1893. His mother was Annie Louisa (nee Morris) and his father was Henry (Harry) Howse.
He is commemorated on Helles Memorial, near Sedd el Bahr, Turkey, Panel 198. His name is also on memorials at St John-in-Bedwardine Church, 1A Bromyard Road Worcester, All Saints Church Worcester, the Worcester Guildhall, and St George’s Church Worcester. He was awarded the Victory, Star and British War Medals.
His death was announced in the Berrows Worcester Journal as follows:
“Worcester Soldier’s Death – Private W Howse of the 1st Hereford Regiment has been killed in the Dardanelles. He was 22 and the son of Mr H Howse of 100 McIntyre Road, St John’s, Worcester. He attended St George’s School and prior to the outbreak of war was Steward at the County Constitution Club in Hereford.”
