A GROUP hoping to save a derelict Droitwich hotel has attracted over 800 members.
Concerned residents came together to 'Save the Raven' after becoming concerned the hotel on St Andrew's Street will end up being knocked down.
The former hotel has continued to decay since closing in 2010 and residents fear it will face the same fate as the Worcestershire Hotel which was demolished to make way for apartments after lying empty for decades.
The iconic black-and-white building is currently listed with a view to turn it into a bar or restaurant.
Plans to build 51 houses and apartments in the grounds of the hotel were given the go-ahead in 2015.
As part of the development, the newer parts of the hotel will be demolished and the original part of the building, which includes wood beams and windows around the front door, will be kept and restored.
Many were quick to express their concern about losing an iconic Droitwich building.
Sam Pugh commented: "One of the last few iconic buildings left in Droitwich I really can't imagine the view down St Andrew's Street without it!
"Our town has a wonderful history which should be used to attract visitors to the town.
"The unique history of the town needs to be preserved for the future else it is in danger of becoming a ghost town."
Holly Williams Mua added: "As a family we shared some significant moments at this venue.
"I've grown up with this beautiful hotel in my town and will be so sad if it was to be taken from us.
"We've already lost so much of our heritage in Droitwich."
Glynis Smith was quick to ask why the demolition of an important historical building in Droitwich was being discussed.
"How can anyone contemplate knocking this iconic building down?" she asked.
"It is part, if not the start, of Droitwich history, as we know it.
"Our own Civic Society thought enough of this building to erect a blue plaque."
The grade-II listed building, which dates back to the 16th century, closed in January 2010 when a decision was made to move all business from the hotel in St Andrew's Street to sister hotel the Chateau Impney.
In April 2012, around half of the building was destroyed by a fire.
