THE Worcester College of Technology's production of We Will Rock You promises to be far from "just another high school musical".

Assistant director Chris Love, himself a graduate of the college's BTEC drama course, made it quite clear that their school edition of the hit Queen musical will rock Worcester.

"The London run has shown that it attracts people who never normally go to the theatre," he says. "Rock fans would never go and see a musical, but they're going to hear the music of Queen and coming out loving the entire theatre experience."

Love is one of many ex-students on board for this production and there is an electric atmosphere during rehearsals.

"We've got a cast of about 30 and a band of about seven or eight," he says.

"Everybody involved loves Queen and I think that comes across. There are people involved who have been around for less time than Freddy Mercury has been dead - but they know his music inside out.

"It's just going to be a great night out."

Written by Ben Elton, in collaboration with Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, the musical is set on a future Earth, where musical instruments are banned and individuality is shunned. But, under the surface resistance is growing and, before long, rock n' roll will be reborn.

"We've got a fantastic band and by the end of the show it turns into a mini rock concert," says Love. "We need a full house because, if there isn't enough audience, people won't feel comfortable enough to dance.

"We want them to sing along. We want to rock Worcester."

We Will Rock You is at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday, July 17 to Saturday, July 21.
