ANIMAL lovers at a Worcester school have been raising money to adopt an orphaned orangutan.

Members of Nunnery Wood High School's eco-club have adopted a two year old orphan called Beryl.

The club launched an Orangutan Appeal after choosing the animal from a number of endangered species.

They raised money via a cake sale and held a guess the name of the orphaned orangutan competition.

The money raised has gone to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo that is funded by Orangutan Appeal UK.

The centre had recently featured on the Paul O'Grady Animal Orphans series on ITV, with details of how the centre works with young orangutans and prepares them for life back in the wild.

Beryl's name was kept a secret from everyone beyond the eco-club and the guess the name competition was won by Jess Collins in Year 7, who won an orangutan puppet.

James Nightingale, geography/eco schools and student challenge, said: “The students are looking forward to hearing about Beryl's progress and eventual release back into the wild and are busy planning further fundraising ideas."
