A Malvern supermarket has announced plans to expand but has withdrawn proposals to open 24 hours a day.

A planning application has been made to extend Morrisons on the Malvern Retail Park in Roman Way by almost 1,000 square metres.

An extension to the east side of the store would see floorspace grow from 5,600 sq m to 6,470 sq m, with an extra 546 sq m of shop space and 329 sq m of warehousing.

Morrisons spokesman Harriet Rodgers said: "Morrisons is looking to secure planning approval for an extension to its Malvern store, comprising an increase in sales floor area and an addition to its warehouse to provide a wider product range for customers."

It had appeared Morrisons was looking to open the store 24 hours a day, with the planning application also proposing extended hours.

However, the firm says this is a mistake and the application will be resubmitted to reflect the store's current opening hours.

The expansion would also create six new full-time jobs.

However, one man who lives just 50 metres from the store's loading area is less than pleased.

Adam Stevens, of Goodson Road, has objected to the proposal because he believes it will lead to round-the-clock deliveries and more disturbance for residents.

"The almost continuous noise associated with unloading 12 articulated lorries a day not only prevents most residents from enjoying their gardens, but also precludes most families from using the bedrooms which face the site," he said.

Mr Stevens said banning Sunday deliveries and building a fully enclosed loading area would help address his concerns.
