PUPILS at a Droitwich school have raised 500 towards the restoration of two historic canals through a special non-uniform day.

Youngsters at Witton Middle School held the event after the launch of the Waterways Trust's Droitwich Canals - Be Part Of It appeal which is raising funds for the restoration of the Barge Canal and the Junction Canal which run through the town.

Kim Chester, development manager for the Waterways Trust, said: "We are delighted that Witton Middle School has responded so enthusiastically to the appeal and care so much about the future of the canals. This money will go directly towards restoring a part of Droitwich history which older generations can remember but that will offer a whole new experience to younger residents."

The Droitwich Canals are undergoing an 11.5 million restoration programme to create a 12km-long linear park.
