A MEMORIAL has been set up to remember the former Bishop of Worcester, the Right Rev Philip Goodrich.

New gates leading from the cloisters to the garth at Worcester Cathedral have been dedicated to the bishop, whose ashes are interred in the cathedral garth.

Bishop Philip was Bishop of Worcester from 1982 to 1996. The new gates are inscribed with the words Remember him before God with thanksgiving', which were chosen by the late Bishop's wife, Margaret Goodrich.

They were dedicated during a special service conducted by the current Bishop of Worcester, the Right Rev Peter Selby.

During his address Bishop Peter said: "As we dedicate Philip's gates the question for us is, what is to be their characteristic position - open or closed?

"The gates keep the draughts and the rain out and make the cloister a more hospitable and usable place. For that practical benefit we thank those who contributed to providing these gates, Margaret and her family for their particular support and especially Philip himself, the 111th Bishop of Worcester, for offering us something useful as well as beautiful.

"But whatever may be the seasonal requirements and the demands of events and the weather, our characteristic action towards them is to open them.

"My guess is that that is the action that will delight our late Father in God and pay tribute to a spiritual understanding of welcome and generosity into which all are invited, an open door through which we go on our way rejoicing to prepare for all people the way of the Lord."

The gates were purchased with donations from churches and individuals across the diocese and everyone who contributed was invited to the dedication service.

The gates were designed by cathedral architect Christopher Romain.
