THE Mayor of Worcester is getting ready to host one of the most important civic events on the city council calendar - the Mayor's Banquet.

Mayor Stephen Inman make his tenure in the post official on Friday, July 6, at the event.

It is customary for the new mayor to be formally welcomed into his new role by fellow civic dignitaries at the annual banquet.

Councillor Inman, a former solicitor, will speak of his plans for the year ahead.

Among the speakers during the evening will be Professor Michael Clarke of Birmingham University and local solicitor David Hallmark, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen's latest Honours list.

Coun Inman has two or three engagements most days, as well as his main role as a councillor for the St Stephen ward.

Next week's diary includes several visits to the Mayor's Parlour from students - some from as far a field as Bologna - and a presentation at the Victoria House Day Nursery.

Coun Inman will also be attending a meeting of Warndon Parish Council, a day-long city summit organised by the Worcester Alliance and attending a performing arts showcase for schools in Malvern.

He said: "It's certainly keeping me busy so far, but I'm enjoying every moment and determined to be flying the flag for Worcester.

"Having lived in Worcester for 19 years and been a council leader between 2002 and 2006, I am familiar with both the city itself and official duties. But it has been a pleasant surprise to discover how highly regarded the role of Mayor is considered in the Faithful City and how much respect is still held for this position."
