POSTAL workers in Worcestershire were taking part in the first national strike in a decade today.
The Communication Workers Union has rejected a 2.5 per cent pay offer and wants the Royal Mail to change its modernisation plans, which the union claims will lead to 40,000 job losses.
Up to 130,000 union members will stage a 24-hour walkout, crippling mail deliveries across the UK. The strike - from 3am today until 3am tomorrow - will include 1,100 workers in Worcestershire, meaning no collections or deliveries across the two counties.
The Federation of Small Businesses said the strike would hit the UK's 3.7 million small businesses, especially as the action is on the final day of the month.
l In a separate dispute, staff from the main Post Offices in Worcester's Foregate Street and Hereford city centre were also striking today and Monday, July 2, between 6am and noon over pay and plans to move branches, including Worcester, into WH Smith.
