THE head of the agency responsible for the UK's flood protection has ruled out quitting in the wake of this week's floods.

Baroness Young of Old Scone, chief executive of the Environment Agency, rejected the charge that she has "manifestly failed" and should consider resignation following devastating floods in Sheffield, Rotherham and the Midlands.

Her defence came as floods continued to affect the country.

The body of a 41-year-old man was found in Nottingham, floating in the river Leam. And rescuers in south Yorkshire called off the search for a person thought to have got stuck in a dyke in Doncaster after failing to find him.

The Queen sent a message of support today to those affected by the devastating floods.

She said her thoughts were with those who lost loved ones in the severe weather.
