A HOLIDAYMAKER riding pilion on a quad bike died when it left the road, an inquest was told.

Margaret Briggs, a 54-year-old college lecturer from Stourbridge Road, Kidderminster, was on holiday in Kos, Greece, with her partner William Baden-Powell on Tuesday, June 12, when the quad bike they had hired skidded on gravel, careered down a six-foot embankment and crashed head-on into a wire fence.

Worcestershire County Coroner's Court in Stourport-on-Severn heard Mr Baden-Powell had been driving cautiously as he was unfamiliar with the road.

Coroner Victor Round said: "William stayed on and took the full force of the impact. When he turned round to tell Margaret he was OK, she was on the ground with her helmet off.

"He thinks he then lost consciousness but is not sure for how long. When he tried to lift her up she seemed lifeless and there was blood coming from her mouth. A doctor confirmed she had died at the scene."

The cause of death was given as the result of spleen and liver rupture.

Mr Round recorded a verdict of accidental death.
