A NOTORIOUSLY Worcestershire road has been discussed in Parliament.

During a question time session, Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff voiced fears that the A449 between Claines roundabout and Ombersley was not safe.

He urged the Department Of Transport to instruct the Highways Agency to carry out a full review of the safety of the road.

However, Mr Luff was disappointed with response he received from Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman, who, he said, dismissed calls for a review because one had been carried out in 2004.

"That 2004 review took place well before the recent string of fatalities, and clearly needs to be revisited," said Mr Luff.

"To dismiss a further safety review in spite of the recent tragedies smacks of dangerous complacency.

"I am pleased that the minister did promise additional signing, together with the installation of an anti-skid surface and hazard marker posts later this year.

"But the simple truth is that the changes made in light of the 2004 review clearly have not worked as well as was hoped.

Mr Luff also said that the speed limit on the A449 - currently 50 and 70mph - between Worcester and Hartlebury needed to be better enforced.

"I am fed up when I use the road with cars flying past me at speeds well in excess of the legal limit," he said.

"Whatever view you take of the need for lower limits on the road, I am sure everyone will agree that existing limits on this killer road must be respected."
