YOUNG sailors from Worcestershire had a frustrating time taking part in a mini regatta.

The youngsters were hoping to sail along the river Avon from their base off the Bredon Road opposite Mitton, but rising water levels and strong currents kept dragging them back.

The annual event was being organised by Tewkesbury Cruising and Sailing Club.

About 30 children aged from seven to 14 took part, many of whom were from Worcestershire.

Unfortunately the weather varied from sunshine to thunderstorms with winds of up to 10 knots.

On the Saturday, the children found their boats were actually going backwards towards Tewkesbury and they had to be towed back by the club safety boats - and on the Sunday, a complete lack of wind meant sailing was impossible.

However, it wasn't all bad news, as on the Saturday evening the children took part in a karaoke evening in the clubhouse. During the day, they took part in paddling races, and a number of shore-based games before enjoying a special tea.

The regatta has now been postponed until Saturday, July 14, when the river should be back to its normal conditions. The club uses small sailing boats called Oppies, which are almost impossible to capsize'.
