THE campaign group which fought to re-open Droitwich's lido is to have its own special opening ceremony where they will remember two of the members who didn't live to see the new £1.5m complex.

John Cox, who was secretary of the now disbanded SALT (Save A Lido Today), said the group will shortly unveil a bench dedicated to the memory of two campaigners for the lido, which opened on Monday.

Mr Cox said:"It's sad that two of our party Ken Buckley and David Parkinson, who both very influential in the early days of our campaign did not live to see the lido re-opened again for the people of Droitwich. It is good that there will be a lasting memory to the work they did."

Mr Cox said the funds for the bench will be with the money left over from SALT's six year campaign for the lido, which was built in the 1930s.

Mr Cox said he was pleased with the end result of the lido and congratulated Wychavon District Council.

He said: "We were campaigning to keep more of the original features but it would be churlish to criticise what has been done. It's a very, very good addition to Droitwich.

He has been to swim in the new 40m heated outdoor pool already.

He said: "The water temperature is perfect. Despite the weather it did not feel at all cold.

Mr Cox, who lives in Ombersley Road, Droitwich also called on the people of Worcestershire to support the venue.

He said: "I would urge everybody in the entire area to come and try it. We have to make sure that as a business it at least breaks even."
