A GROUP of people wrapped up warm and slept outside in order to raise money for the Worcester's homeless.

About 30 people, including staff and clergy from Worcester Cathedral, spent Saturday night on College Green. The aim of The Big Sleep Out, organised by St Paul's Hostel for the Homeless, based in Shrub Hill, Worcester, was for people to experience life without a roof over their heads.

St Paul's fund-raiser Mike Field said, although they expected more people, it went well and raised about £1,000.

"We had a great time," he said.

"The most important thing is that this event, as well as raising money, leads to more knowledge about the plight of the homeless. It raises the profile of St Paul's and the important work we do."

Those who braved the damp weather enjoyed a snack supper, music from a live jazz band and breakfast in the morning.

Meanwhile, in Malvern, Amnesty International (AI) supporters spent Saturday night sleeping at Lyttelton Well in Malvern town centre in aid of Refugee Week 2007.

Bob Leverett, chairman of the Malvern AI, said: "People were very supportive and friendly and we think it was a good way to draw attention to the plight of refugees who have no means of support.
