A 22-year-old man who admitted having an axe in Worcester city centre in the daytime has been warned he is facing a jail sentence.
Martin Coffey pleaded guilty to having the axe as an offensive weapon in The Cross at about 4pm on October 24 this year when he appeared at Worcester Crown Court.
Pleas of not guilty to affray but guilty to a public order offence were accepted by Christopher Lester for the prosecution.
Coffey, of Clee Avenue, Kidderminster, was granted bail on condition he does not enter Worcester city centre.
A pre-sentence report was ordered and Judge Abbas Mithani, QC, warned Coffey it was likely he would be facing jail when he returns to court for sentencing in the week of December 19.
"These are serious offences," he said. "The public has to be concerned about the culture of carrying weapons of this type and a period of immediate custody is likely."
