A MALVERN man crashed his car while more than two-and-a-half times the drink limit after attempting to drive home from a pub.

Samuel Morris, of Edith Berry Court, Malvern, was banned from driving for two years at Worcester Magistrates Court on Thursday after admitting driving with excess alcohol.

Morris, aged 65, crashed his Land Rover Discovery into a parked car in Merton Road, Malvern, on Saturday, June 16, at 6.30pm after attempting to drive one-and-a-half miles home from the pub.

A breath test revealed that Morris had 90 mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit being 35mcg.

Emma Lile, prosecuting, said: "After the accident police went round to his house. He smelled of alcohol and he was arrested."

David Taylor, defending, said that before this, Morris had had an unblemished driving record after passing his test at the age of 19 and had never had any penalty points or accidents or even a parking ticket.

He added: "This is not a man with a drink problem. He goes out twice a week - to play crib and to go to the pub and the bookmakers. That's the extent of his social life. He had been at the pub to await the outcome of a bet. He had more than he should have had."

Morris knew the man whose car he had hit and had already paid him £200 to cover the cost of the damage.

Morris was fined £235 for driving with excess alcohol, to which was added a £15 victim surcharge. He also has to pay £60 court costs.
