A PARK-and-ride scheme at Sixways, Worcester, will cause chaos, according to Wychavon councillors.

Worcestershire County Council wants the facility at Worcester Rugby Club, close to junction six of the M5 motorway.

It will provide up to 650 parking spaces for shoppers and commuters coming into the city but only on non-match days, Mondays to Saturday.

Wychavon District Council has objected to the scheme on the grounds that it will cause confusion for motorists who will not know when the site is open and closed.

Councillor Pam Davey said: "This will be a recipe for absolute chaos. If it cannot be used on Saturdays, it should not be used at all."

The county council has been considering several new sites for the park and ride facilities in the city.

Mike Hurst, head of planning at Wychavon, said this site had been chosen because of its current infrastructure but he said that he too had raised concerns about the closure of the site on match days.

He said: "We have requested that adequate signage be put in place to make motorists aware of when the site is open for use or closed for match purposes."

Coun Margaret Rowley backed the scheme, saying the car park was already being used as a park-and-ride for businesses in the area.

She said: "It's a good position and we desperately need more park-and-ride spaces for Worcester."

The council objected to the scheme by 10 votes to eight but the plan will be decided by the county council.
