SUPERMARKET staff from Worcester are raising money for the British Red Cross using a theme of a day at the races.

To mark the start of Royal Ascot, Tesco staff at the store in St Peter's Drive are raising money with themed events such as wearing fancy hats to work on ladies' day, a horseplay night, and a pick-a-pony competition. All the money raised will be spent locally in Worcestershire.

This year's Tesco charity of the year is the British Red Cross and its goal is to raise £2 million for the charity in 2007. The money will be spent on first aid training, emergency equipment, and care in the home services.

"There is no need to travel all the way to Ascot - just pop in to Tesco for a little flutter instead," a spokesman said.

"All the money raised will go directly to the British Red Cross and help vulnerable people in our neighbourhood.

"Together we can ensure that no one faces a crisis alone"
