LET the weather do its worst the Upton Jazz Festival is up, running and raring to go.

Despite the fact that Worcestershire has been taking a pounding from the rain in recent days, the organiser of Britain's premier traditional jazz jamboree is upbeat about the prospects for this weekend's three-day event.

"The rain has kept off just enough. We're getting some sunshine and the other night an easterly wind took off much of the moisture on Fish Meadow," said Alan Buckley, prime mover of the festival that is now in its 22nd year.

"Obviously, we're keeping an eye on things. But whatever happens, we can deal with it - we do have contingency plans. A few years ago, volunteers and staff had to put straw down on the walkways but we haven't reached that situation yet by any means."

Upton-upon-Severn will once again host its spectacular tribute to classic sounds with performers appearing in marquees on Fish Meadow and at other venues in the town.

Many top acts are included in this year's programme for the International Oliver Cromwell Jazz Festival, including the Chris Barber Band, Allen Beechey's Bright Stars of Jazz and John Petters' International Band.

The festival will, as usual, feature a wide variety of styles, from New Orleans, Dixieland and traditional swing to hot club, jump-jive and comedy.

The marquees will have all the flavour and atmosphere of the great jazz dives of the 1920s and 30s, sporting titles such as Fat's Place and Oliver's.

There are eight venues, including the stage beneath the river bridge.

MV Conway Castle will be cruising on the river with bands on board and there will be lots of stalls.

Entry to the venues is gained by buying a day or weekend stroller ticket or an evening ticket available from 6pm on Friday and Sunday only.

The music starts at midday on Friday and finishes at 11pm on Sunday.

The highlight of the festival will be the Saturday morning jazz parade, which marches through Upton featuring two mardi gras bands, the Energy Dancers and Second Liners.

The latter always fill the town with a huge splash of colour with their decorated umbrellas as they walk from the parish church to the riverside in true New Orleans style.

Mr Buckley said: "We're very happy with this year's line-up. It looks like being a great weekend for jazz lovers who will be coming to the festival from far and near."
