THE owners of a Malvern fish and chip shop escaped by inches when a runaway car ploughed through the front of their restaurant shortly before noon today.

Peter and Yid Ho, who were working behind the counter at the Great Malvern Fish Bar, in Graham Road, narrowly escaped being hit as the dark grey Volvo 480 came crashing through the glass shop front.

Although the shop was open it had no customers at the time. "The car came down at full speed, and it never looked like it was going to stop," said a shaken Mr Ho afterwards.

Police, fire and ambulance crews rushed to the scene, with eyewitness reports claiming the car came down the hill from Waitrose at around 30mph, before attempting to turn right and ploughing into the restaurant.

Its elderly male driver got out of the vehicle straight away, while his elderly female passenger was carried out to a waiting ambulance by paramedics a few moments later.
