A PIECE of art to remember those who died in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, created by a group of Worcester students, has been highly commended in a national competition.
Year 9 students at St Mary's Convent School, Mount Battenhall, entered the competition to design a modern representation of the disaster. The class made casts of their hands from plaster, which were then arranged on a grey-painted canvas.
A spokesman for the school said: "These represented the citizens of Pompeii desperately trying to crawl out of the burning ash of Vesuvius. Splashes of colour represented flames from the mountain itself, as well as the lava of the volcano. The dull grey colour of the canvas represents the ash which choked the Pompeians. This entombed the people within."
The school received a certificate from the University of Bristol, which is to display the work at an archaeological conference.
