THE wet weather could not dampen the enthusiasm as Droitwich's lido finally re-opened after a long battle.

Swimmers made their way through the turnstiles to use the £1.5 million complex when the venue opened to the public at 7am yesterday after a six-year wait.

New Wychavon leader Paul Middleborough warned the future of the lido was in the hands of the public.

He said: "It's up to the public now - they can use it or lose it. It's fantastic that it has re-opened and it is a great facility for Droitwich.

"There were people there for an early-morning swim, and it's nice to swim in the rain. Let's hope that the sun is shining at the weekend and that the people of Droitwich use this great facility."

Despite yesterday's poor weather hardy souls braved the elements to take a dip at the 68-year-old lido's new 40m x 18m heated outdoor pool.

The lido also has a beach area and fountain as well as new changing facilities, toilets and showers.

There is also a reception area with a cafe and a wet play area for youngsters.

The lido had been at the centre of a long-running fight to save it with a group calling itself SALT (Save A Lido Today) formed. It formulated a business plan for the pool and last year unveiled its proposals.

Mayor of Droitwich Richard Morris said: "After all this time we now have this unique amenity back. We now have what I believe to be the only inland salt water lido in the country.

"Well done SALT and the people of Droitwich for fighting for the lido. Your efforts have been really worthwhile.

"Thank you to Wychavon District Council for developing a 21st century lido for what I am sure many in Droitwich and surrounding areas will love for years ahead."
