TOMORROW is the last chance for the people of Worcester to have their say on controversial plans to close the city's main post office.

That's when the so-called public consultation period ends for the decision to close the Foregate Street office and move it to the first floor of the WH Smith store on the High Street.

This consultation process has been somewhat bizarre. Post Office bosses say the closure decision has been taken - they just want to gauge public opinion.

We can save them the trouble of going through the paperwork. The people of Worcester do not want this to happen. And today we urge the Post Office to think again.

A city of Worcester's size needs a dedicated post office. So think again.

Putting a smaller facility inside a High Street store is not good enough. So think again.

Having a post office on the first floor when it is likely to be used by many elderly, disabled and vulnerable people is absurd. So think again.

The Post Office says it is losing £70 million a year nationwide and needs to balance the books. What it means is that it has to cut costs. We understand that - all businesses have to keep their costs under control.

But providing a service that will be significantly inferior to the current one shows an utter lack of long-term vision.

Our readers have had their say on our letters page and our website. Politicians from across the party spectrum have made their views known. And the message is consistent. The Post Office has got this wrong.

Its plan is flawed and offering people a consultation after a final decision has been taken is an insult.

It is not too late for the Post Office to change its plans. Doing so would not be a sign of weakness. It would show an ability to listen and react to the needs of the public.

Our message to the Post Office is simple and is worth repeating.

Think again.
