MORE and more people are paying visits to historic gardens in Worcestershire.
The Berkeley Family, who have owned Spetchley Park Gardens in Worcester for more than 400 years, have reported that visitor numbers to the estate are almost 50 per cent up on last year.
Originally opened in 1924 as one of only three gardens in the National Gardens Scheme, Spetchley has remained a hidden gem, appreciated by keen gardeners for its collections of rare plants and themed gardens. More recently, open air summer concerts and the atmospheric Illuminated Trail have helped build up its reputation as an events venue.
"We are delighted that so many more people are coming to Spetchley and enjoying what it has to offer, whether they are keen gardeners or families enjoying a day out," said owner John Berkeley.
Joint marketing and a more pro-active approach are now making the gardens better known to a wider audience. Last year Spetchley was voted in a national poll the nation's fourth favourite garden and the immensely popular Illuminated Trail was named as one of Britain's finest outdoor attractions by Daily Telegraph readers.
Over the past two years, 19,000 people have visited the gardens specifically for the unique walk set in 30 acres of Victorian gardens.
The Berkley family have, as a result, been considering expanding the event to include themed nights and a Christmas fair.
As well as specific events, there are wedding receptions in the gardens and produce from the grounds, notably venison, is being sold to the public.
