AFTER years of battling for private investment, planning and building, Droitwich's historic lido is to re-open on Monday.

Wychavon District Council's £1.5 million facelift is hoped to bring the 68-year-old complex right into the 21st century.

The complex includes a new remodelled 40m by 18m heated outdoor swimming pool with a beach area and fountain as well as new changing facilities, toilets and showers.

There is also a new reception area with a super café serving light snacks to lido and park visitors and a wet play area for children. It will be managed by Wychavon Leisure on behalf of the council.

Prices are £3.50 for adults and £2 for juniors and over 60s. It is £1 for children aged between two and five and free for babies.

A family of four (two adults and two under 16's) is £10.

Peter Williams, director of Wychavon Leisure said: "Wychavon Leisure, is delighted to be running this wonderful facility for all of the community to enjoy. It's a great day out for all the family and we look forward to many long hot summer days for people to enjoy the lido.

"This exciting project has facilities that will appeal to families and residents of all ages."

Leader of the council Paul Middlebrough said "What a fabulous facility.

"I know everyone's going to have a lot of fun there over the summer and for generations to come."

The attraction closed in 2001 and was at the centre of a long-running debate.

A group calling itself SALT (Save A Lido Today) was formed to fight for its future.

In March 2004 SALT was told by the council's executive board to supply a six-month business plan for the pool or see it demolished.

In 2006 after consultations with the public, the council - which owns the site - unveiled its own proposals.

After winning the battle SALT disbanded, but will meet for one last time to mark the opening of the complex.

The lido will be open for early morning swims between 7am and 9am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It will be open weekdays between 11am and 7.30pm and between 10am and 5pm at weekends.
