A Worcester man has pleaded guilty to the fraudulent evasion of income tax over five years, but is disputing the actual amount.

When 33-year-old Afran Aslam, of Ludlow Avenue, Warndon Villages, entered his plea at Worcester Crown Court, prosecutor Nicolas Cartwright said the amount of tax due was £21,000.

It was owed for a period between January 1, 2001, and March 13, 2006.

But defence counsel Neil Chawla said Aslam had consulted an accountant who had estimated the due tax at £8,832. He said that Aslam agreed he had to pay tax but the amount was not as great as alleged by Revenue and Customs.

Judge Andrew Geddes adjourned the hearing until June 26 for the prosecution to study a three-volume report submitted by the defence. He remanded Aslam on bail and ordered a pre-sentence report.
