A day of celebration and reflection marked the official launch of a fund set up in the name of a University of Worcester student killed in a terrorist attack.

Joel Richards, 19, died alongside his uncle Adrian Evans and grandfather Pat Evans on a beach in Sousse, Tunisia.

Mr Richards's brother Owen was also there but survived.

The gun attack in June 2015 by Seifeddine Rezgui left 38 people dead, most of them British tourists.

The Joel Richards Legacy Fund has been created by the Birmingham County FA to honour the memory of the PE and sports coaching science student who was an aspiring referee and chairman of the Birmingham County FA Youth Council.

The Joel Richards Legacy Fund will be a bursary fund available for local young coaches, referees and volunteers.

Individuals can apply for funding to help support their progression through their football journey.

Mr Richards's friends, family and colleagues took part in a headline match to launch the fund and raise money for it on Sunday, July 31.

Kirsty Dixon, chairman of Birmingham FA’s Youth Council, said: “Joel was an amazing role model, inspiring young people throughout all areas of football, refereeing, coaching and volunteering.

"Joel dedicated his time to support as many people as possible, and always knew how to put a smile on your face.

“His legacy will continue through the many awards in his name, and now the Joel Richards Legacy Fund.

"We hope to continue the support he personally provided through the fund, which will benefit many – especially those who need some support to kick-start or help them on their own football journey.”

The day, which also included a referee workshop and activities with schoolchildren, was held at the Association’s Ray Hall Lane headquarters, in Birmingham.
