BRICKFIELDS fireworks will be back with a bang after they were cancelled last year because of funding cuts.

A group of dedicated volunteers have put in tireless hours trying to organise the 2016 event after Worcester Community Trust said it could no longer run the display.

Last year's cancellation caused upset among people living nearby - not least mum-of-three Natalie Gowing who took it up on herself to try and bring them back.

After setting up a Facebook group, the 34-year-old has now formed a committee with Friends of KGV playing fields Marilyn Furlong, Jason Holder, Darren Haines and police officer Tina Cowen.

Also on the committee are Francis Lankester, Rainbow Hill councillor and leader of the city council Adrian Gregson, mayor coun Paul Denham and coun Alan Feeney.

Following regular meetings and a lot of hard work - the group has now announced that the fireworks will be returning on Thursday, November 3.

The group has raised £2,000 thank to a £1,500 donation from coun Fenney and a £500 from mayor of Worcester coun Denham.

They need to raise another £1,000 and are hoping people will donate via their crowdfunding page.

Miss Gowing said: "There has been ups and downs trying to get funding.

"There were a few times we thought it wouldn't be able to go ahead.

"But thanks to the mayor giving us a donation and Alan Feeney giving us a large donation we are now looking forward to it."

She said the fireworks will cost between £1,500 to £2,000 and raising £3,000 would mean they would not have to struggle to fund other essentials such as toilets as well as having some money left for next year's event.

Coun Feeney said he was delighted to give a donation which meant the "much-loved" fireworks would be able to return.

"I have attended the Brickfields fireworks in the past and always had a great time.

"To be involved with such a wonderful group of people who are clearly passionate about the community they live in has been truly heartwarming.

"I can't wait for the big day."

It will feature a display, entertainment and food but there will be no funfair this year.

Thousands of people usually come to watch the fireworks on the playing fields and the committee hope they, or the followers of the Facebook page, can donate £1 to ensure its success.

"We were all upset when it was cancelled this year abut people are happy to see that it is going to come back.

"We're going to be going back to basics and keep costs low.

"We want to do it for the community, for people who haven't got a lot of money and want to take three or four children out and not spend a fortune.

"It does feel really good to know it's coming back and we're really looking forward to it."
