UPDATE: the road reopened at about 1.25pm.

A MAN has been taken to hospital following a crash on the A46 near Evesham.

The crash, involving a car hitting a tree, happened at about 10.30am.

Emergency services were called to the scene, and fire crews from Evesham and Broadway cut a man free from the wreckage of the vehicle, a silver 4x4, by taking the roof off.

The man, who is in his 70s, was taken to the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, although it is not yet known how badly hurt he is.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of a single vehicle collision on the A46 between Badsey Island in the direction of the island at Twyford Country Park, at around 10.30am this morning.

"Fire and ambulance also attended and a silver 4x4 was found to be in collision with a tree.

"The driver, a man in his 70s, has been taken to hospital but there are no further updates on any injuries at this time.

"As of 11.33am there are road closures in place on the A46 from Badsey Island and we advise motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes."

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 184s of August 2.
