A song-cycle by a Worcester composer was premiered at a concert to commemorate World War One.

Nationally acclaimed composer Ian Venables's Through These Pale Cold Days was performed at the concert at RGS Worcester on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

The event took place in Perrins Hall and its walls had been decorated with assemblies of poppies, made by pupils from the school.

John Pitt, Headmaster at RGS Worcester said: "The Concert was a wonderful event for RGS to host and we were pleased to welcome the Mayor of Worcester and many other influential guests.

"The music was incredibly powerful and moving – a fitting tribute to the many who were killed or injured during the Somme."

Ian Venables said: "The premiere of my war cycle 'Through These Pale Cold Days' was one of the most memorable and moving performances I have ever experienced.

"RGS did everything possible to make this special World War One commemorative concert such a great success."

The song-cycle Through These Pale Cold Days was performed by professional musicians including tenor Nick Pritchard, pianist Benjamin Frith, and violist Louise Williams before a large audience from all over the country and even from as far afield as the Netherlands.

Mr Venables has written more than 60 works in this genre, including eight song-cycles.

The RGS senior string group also performed Mozart Symphony No25 (Excerpt) and Piazzola (Oblivion).
